The World Has Not Ended…Yet!
Dear Traders,
I am writing this newsletter from Buenos Aires, Argentina, where I escaped World War 3. After Putin ordered troops to enter regions of Eastern Europe, I thought for certain that a nuclear war was about to be launched and thus, where better to survive it and stay alive, than in southern Argentina and Patagonia.
Of course, I am joking. I am actually here for an ultra trail running race in Ushuaia, then going to El Chaltén to partake in more running in addition to some climbing. Even though Russia has recognized two separatist regions of Ukraine, the world has not ended (yet), and the equity market did not sell off as much as everyone expected. The sanctions against Russia announced by the U.S. and its allies yesterday are being seen as less severe than anticipated. While they have been described as a “first tranche” of measures, they fell well short of what some analysts were predicting.
In Europe, the most significant move came with the halting of certification of the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline. Putin has said he remains open to diplomatic solutions as long as Russian interests are guaranteed. There is little sign of panic in global equity prices this morning as investors view these initial sanctions as being fairly limited in scope and effectiveness.
