I Finished the Most Difficult Race of My Life!
Dear Traders,
I have now concluded the Extreme option of the Santo Antão Triangle Trail Race in Cape Verde, a collection of volcanic islands off the coast of northwest Africa. The race itself was just under 70 miles (110 km) in length with an elevation gain of some 22,000 feet (6,706 m), and I finished last! Yes, last, but at least I did finish! This was one of the harshest runs I have ever competed in! My time was 20:33 while the first person to complete the race came in at 10:38. This demonstrates to me both how amazing the human body is and how, if we strive and work hard, we can become better and better. Out of 22 runners, only 6 finished, and I was the last person to finish all 3 days of races!
The first person to accomplish this literally grueling challenge was my friend, Tom Owens, who is 40 years old. If he can successfully complete this type of race in under 11 hours, on an extreme trail and in extreme heat, then I can do it too! But I can only do it if I train more consistently, eat healthier foods, and reduce my alcohol intake. The Santo Antão Triangle Trail has certainly inspired me to improve my life. I want to become better. Truth be told, I felt horrible being the last person. There is a saying though, if you are the best in the room, you are in the wrong room. It is much more difficult, but also much more rewarding in the end, to find yourself uncomfortable around people who are better than you. You will be inspired.
Today, I managed to trade from my amazing Airbnb apartment in Lisbon. I will be staying here until my PCR results come in. I also will be visiting a friend and some traders before flying back to Vancouver. I am really looking forward to trading again in our office for the next few weeks.
